Troubleshooting Safety

Know which household equipment checks are reasonable for an owner and when to stop, disconnect utilities, or call a qualified professional.

Stop immediately for an active hazard

Leave the equipment off and follow local emergency guidance if you smell gas, see smoke or arcing, find scorched wiring, hear a refrigerant or pressurized-gas leak, see water reaching electrical parts, or suspect carbon monoxide. Move to a safe location when conditions require it.

Before a user-accessible check

• Read the exact model manual and preserve warranty requirements.
• Disconnect electrical power where the manufacturer directs; an off button may not isolate power.
• Close water or gas only if the manual identifies the user control and you can do so safely.
• Let hot water, heating surfaces, and pressurized systems cool.
• Use containers, towels, eye protection, or cut-resistant gloves where the page identifies those risks.

Work that belongs to a professional

Do not bypass an interlock or safety switch. Do not open sealed combustion, gas, refrigerant, high-voltage, microwave, capacitor, boiler-pressure, or hard-wired electrical compartments unless you are qualified and the work is lawful in your location.

Reset is not repair

A reset can clear a stored display and allow a test. It does not remove a blockage, stop a leak, restore safe combustion, or repair a failed component. Repeated resets can hide an intermittent safety condition.
